INTERNATIONAL  INTERNSHIPS

International internship opportunities can be found both in other countries and also here in the United States.  Some opportunities are paid while others provide a minimal living stipend or no pay at all.  Explore the links below to find internship opportunities around the world.


University of Utah Internship Programs

Independent Internships and Internship Organizations

  • HELP International – Based in Provo, HELP organizes service trips to a variety of countries to train college-age participants to design and implement sustainable development projects.  HELP hires students to serve as International Country Directors and internships are also available in the Provo office.
  • The Hope Alliance – Based in Salt Lake City, The Hope Alliance works to empower impoverished people with the skills and tools they need to create positive change in their lives.  Internships are available in the microcredit program in Peru.
  • Ascend – Based in Holladay, Ascend provides assistance through education to empower communities in need to achieve sustainability and end the cycle of poverty.  Internships are available in a variety of locations including Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, and Ethiopia.   
  • German Academic Exchange Service – The DAAD is an independent organization of higher education institutions in Germany that provides scholarships and internships to U.S. students who wish to work and study in Germany.  The internship programs available include Research Internships in Science and Engineering (RISE), RISE professional for students about to complete an undergraduate degree, internXchange for students studying journalism and communications with intermediate-advanced German, and the Bundestag Internship which gives students an opportunity to work in the German parliament.
  • American-Scandinavian Foundation (ASF) – ASF has several internship placements including chemical engineering/chemistry placements in Sweden and forestry and life science placements in Finland.
  • Institute of International Education/Latin America Internship Program – IIE’s Office for Latin America in Mexico City hosts an internship program for undergraduate or graduate students who wish to gain experience in an international non-profit organization.  The office provides internships in two administrative offices within IIE/Latin America: the Scholarship Division and the Educational Advising Division.
  • International Cooperative Education – ICE provides internship placements in a variety of different fields including banking and financing, social work, biotechnology and bioengineering, sales, agriculture, computer engineering, and hospitality.  There is a fee for service associated with this program.
  • AIESEC – AIESEC is a student-run organization that offers young people the opportunity to be global citizens, to change the world, and to get experience and skills that matter today.  Professional internships are offered in areas of management, technology, education, and development.
  • Intrax – Intrax offers internships in Europe and Asia. There is a fee for service associated with this program.
  • CDS International – CDS offers internships in Argentina, Germany, Switzerland, and Spain.  Most internships placements are paid but there is a placement fee.

International Internships in Utah and the U.S.

  • Utah Council for Citizen Diplomacy - The UCCD connects Utah to the world through a variety of exchange and educational programs.  They provide internship opportunities throughout the year.
  • World Trade Center Utah – Follow the link for information about the World Trade Center but search for internships with this organization in UCareerLink.  Also, sign up for their newsletter the Global Utah Weekly.
  • U.S. Commercial Service - The U.S. Commercial Service's Utah U.S. Export Assistance Center (USEAC) offers students Fall and Spring semester internship programs to gain invaluable practical business experience in the field of international trade.
  • Governor’s Office of Economic Development – The International Trade and Diplomacy Office within the GOED has local internship opportunities.
  • International Rescue Committee – The IRC posts jobs that allow you to help refugees thrive in America.  Internships are available throughout the U.S.
  • Ouelessebougou – The Ouelessebougou Alliance focuses on humanitarian and development efforts in Mali, West Africa.  Visit their website for more information on the organization and search for internship opportunities in UCareerLink.
  • Catholic Community Services - CCS runs Refugee Resettlement, Basic Needs Services and Treatment Services programs all aimed at helping people regain their lives.  Look under “Volunteer” for information on how to apply for an internship.

  • Ascend – Based in Holladay, Ascend provides development assistance through education to empower communities in need to achieve sustainability and end the cycle of poverty.  Internships are available in their headquarters here in Utah in accounting, fundraising and grant writing, event planning, public relations and marketing and a variety of other disciplines. 

Internships through Government Agencies Abroad and in the U.S.

  • U.S. Department of State - Offers a listing of foreign affairs internships at embassies and consulates abroad.  
  • USAID – USAID offers both paid and unpaid internships for undergraduate and graduate students from a variety of majors.
  • National Security Agency – NSA offers the Summer Language Program which gives students the opportunity to sharpen their language skills in reading and listening while working as an apprentice to a senior NSA language analyst.  The internships are in Washington D.C.
  • Central Intelligence Agency – The CIA provides domestic internships for undergraduate and graduate students from diverse academic backgrounds. 
  • European Union – The EU Delegation to the United States of America provides unpaid internships at their offices in Washington, DC and New York. 
  • International Atomic Energy Agency – IAEA offers internships for students who have completed two years of full-time study at a university or who have completed a degree program within the last two years. 
  • International Fund for Agricultural Development – IFAD’s internship program offers placements for current undergraduate and graduate students from a variety of majors.
  • African Development Foundation – Unpaid internships are available for undergraduate and graduate students and recent graduates who have an interest in Africa.
  • U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom – Unpaid internships are available in communications, policy analysis, legal research, and government relations.
  • U.S. Trade and Development Agency – USTDA has internships in their regional programs of Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Eastern Europe, as well as Congressional and Public Affairs and Economic/Evaluations offices.
